How to stop speaking French like an English person

Sound more French and stop making common anglophone mistakes when you speak

Would you answer OUI to any of the following 3 questions?

  1. Are you tired of sounding like an English speaker when you speak French because you use the wrong word or forget to include an important one?
  2. Are you tired of piecing sentences together in French the way you would in English even though you know it's not the right way to do it, but you aren't quite sure what to do?
  3. Do you want your cute English accent to be the ONLY way anyone can tell you're not a native speaker?
How do you say the following sentences in French? Do you know when you should use POUR, DEPUIS and PENDANT?
  • I'm going on vacation for 2 weeks.
  • I've been studying French for 2 years.
  • I was in France for 2 months.
Do you know why ALL of the following sentences are all incorrect?
  • J'arrive chez toi environ 17h00.
  • Je vais à l'école en vélo.
  • J'attends pour toi devant ta chez.
  • Tu ne t'es pas lavé tes mains?
This mini-course is specifically for English speakers, though not necessarily only for native speakers. In this course I will share with you 50 sentences in which there are mistakes that I've heard hundreds of times over the last 20 years of teaching French to anglophones. The mistakes highlighted range from the intermediate beginner level to upper intermediate. It may make you feel better to know you're not alone, and believe me... I spent many years making the same mistakes myself! Maybe you just haven't had it all explained to in a way that makes it easy to understand (in English, to start with).

In this course you'll start off by taking a 50 point multiple choice quiz to familiarize yourself with the content. Next, you'll challenge yourself to have a closer look at the 50 sentences in a new section (without the multiple choice answers) and figure out what is wrong with them. Once you've written your answers you'll have an opportunity to check your work. Don't worry, you won't only see the answers. How would that be helpful?? You'll receive a 21 page document to download. On this PDF you'll see the correct answers along with detailed explanations for all 50 sentences as to WHY it is this way in French as compared to the way we as English speakers are tempted to do it.

Mais ce n'est pas tout! You'll also get a 20 minute audio recording in which you'll hear me say the sentence to be translated in English. I'll give you time to say your sentence in French before you hear me say in French (twice, so that you can listen and repeat while improving fluency and pronunciation).

If you have any questions at all about this new mini-course designed just for learners like you, please don't hesitate to drop me a line. That's what I'm here for :-)

Bonjour! I'm Jennifer, and I’m an American French teacher living in the South of France. My native language is English, and I speak French fluently. I love to travel, and have led guided tours in 15 countries in Western Europe with my former students from the United States. I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French, then taught French for a year and moved to France for a year before pursuing and earning a Master of Arts degree in French. I taught French at Saint Louis University High School, a Jesuit college preparatory school for young men, for 14 years. In the summer of 2013 I relocated to France with my family, and spent the summer working as Dean of l’Académie de France in Montpellier, a French immersion program for teenagers from around the world. A while before relocating to France, I began teaching French online via Skype. I am now teaching French online full time and I also give immersion classes and guided city visits in both languages in Béziers, France.

It’s my job to guide you and help you along on your journey to learn French. Learning should be fun, and I will make sure that enjoy yourself as you improve your listening, writing, reading, and most importantly your speaking skills. Over the years I have developed many creative strategies to guarantee your progress. All students have different learning styles, different strengths and weaknesses, and different levels. One of my first jobs as your teacher is to provide you with an approach that will suit your learning style so that you will get the most out of your classes as possible.
